Due to the very high temperatures and humidity levels in Florida for most of the year, the best time to visit it is from late November to the beginning of April, winter in the Northern Hemisphere. The ‘season,’ as it’s called, is when the thermometer goes from the mid-90’s down to the very pleasant 70’s Fahrenheit (21°C), with almost no humidity in the air. Most winter days are bright and sunny with no rain, and – most importantly – fears of hurricanes are put aside until the summer.
Winter is when what Floridians call ‘snow-birds’ come to Florida in droves, from other parts of the US, Canada and even Europe (Russians are a big contingent), where harsh winters make life difficult, especially for older people. Some of these ‘birds’ have second homes in Florida, either on the Atlantic side, known as the Gold Coast (Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach), or on the Gulf of Mexico side (Tampa, Fort Myers, Sarasota). Their houses and apartments sit empty for the rest of the year, when they go back home.
But no matter what side of the Florida peninsula people choose for a winter escape, they will find the weather here close to perfect. It’s time to take out boats, practice water sports – or simply swim or walk on the clean and safe beaches of either coast.
It’s true that coming May the heat and the humidity will return, but for a few months of every year, there’s no place like Florida. And this ‘secret’ is becoming known to more and more people around the world, every year.
